Pre-Arrival Sessions and Orientation for New Students

International Student and Scholar Services welcomes you to 自慰视频! All students on an F or a J visa must complete a SEVIS check-in session with our office. More details about this are listed below. Please check back frequently for updates!

SEVIS Check-In

Upon arrival to 自慰视频, all incoming international students (including students returning from a leave of absence) must complete a mandatory SEVIS check-in with ISSS. This process collects copies of your F-1 or J-1 status documents and provides the information ISSS needs to report your arrival in SEVIS. Check-in is mandatory. You must also check-in before you will be able to apply for a driver鈥檚 license or social security number, and before you can complete the I-9 process (required for on-campus employment).

To complete your check-in with ISSS, please submit the on the ISSS Portal.

International Student Orientation

All international students coming on an F or J student visa who are new to 自慰视频 are required to attend an international student orientation. (This includes students who are transferring their SEVIS record to 自慰视频.)

International graduate/professional studentsmust attend an in-person orientation hosted by ISSS on August 13, 2025, from 9 AM – 12 PM. Orientation will be held in the Student Life Center Ballroom. If you have questions about the graduate/professional orientation, please contact isss@vanderbilt.edu.

International undergraduate students must attend an in-person orientation facilitated by Residential Colleges. Their office will communicate information about move-in and orientation in the coming months. If you are an international undergraduate student and have questions about move-in/orientation, please email commons@vanderbilt.edu.

Pre-Arrival Sessions with ISSS

Each summer, ISSS hosts a series of virtual pre-arrival sessions to get you prepared for arrival and help you maximize your experience and success. This summer’s sessions are listed below.

  • Navigating the Visa Interview: The visa interview can be intimidating. This session will help you understand what to expect at the interview and how to prepare. A representative from Argo Visa, a company staffed by former consular officials, will lead this session. Please note: This session will provide general information and will not provide 1:1 coaching. .
  • Before Your Flight: Are you wondering what to pack as you prepare to travel to Nashville? Join us for a session on what to bring with you to Nashville! We will also give a brief overview of what to expect when you enter the U.S.听
  • Academics in the : Educational systems can be different country-to-country. Even if you have studied in the U.S. before, the academic culture and resources available at 自慰视频 may be different from what you encountered at your previous institution. This session, led by the English Language Center (ELC), will discuss academic culture in the U.S. and resources to help you be academically successful.听
  • Payment Processes at 自慰视频: Students must pay their invoice each semester. How do you get your bill? What payment methods does 自慰视频 accept? Learn this and other payment-related information at this session, which will be led by the Student Accounts Office.听
  • So You Want to Work On-Campus?: Many students successfully find jobs on campus. This session will discuss the process of finding an on-campus job, onboarding paperwork, and tax forms that you will need after you are hired. (Note: This session will only cover on-campus employment; off-campus employment will be discussed in a separate session.) .
  • Health Insurance: 鈥淒eductible.鈥 鈥淐o-Insurance.鈥 鈥淧rimary Care Provider.鈥 The U.S. healthcare system can be confusing, even for Americans. This session will provide a general overview of how health insurance in the U.S. works. Representatives from AHP Healthcare will talk about your student health insurance plan.听
  • Planning Ahead: The Job Search in the U.S.: Many international students are interested in utilizing OPT or academic training to work in the U.S. after graduation. Finding a job can be challenging, but 自慰视频 has many great resources available to help you! Learn more from 自慰视频’s Career Center.听
  • Can I Get a Job Off-Campus? F-1 and J-1 Employment Options: F-1 and J-1 visas are for the purpose of studying in the U.S. However, there ae some circumstances in which off-campus employment may be allowable. This session will give a very brief overview of CPT, OPT, and academic training.听
  • Getting Settled in Nashville: Moving to a new location is both exciting and stressful. There are so many things to do when you first arrive. This session will give you a general overview of what to do when you arrive in Nashville – such as setting up a bank account, getting a social security number, and more.听
  • Driving and Transportation: With or without a car, you will need to know how to get around Nashville. Learn about the steps for getting a driver’s license in Tennessee, as well as about Nashville’s public transportation options.听
