New Content Experience Transition

Brightspace Content is Getting Upgraded

Beginning with the Fall 2027 semester, Brightspace courses will default to the New Content Experience. Additionally, Instructors now have the ability to enable or disable the New Content Experience in their own courses ahead of the change in Fall 2027. For more information about this transition, see our New Content Experience Transition page.

What is exactly changing?

Beginning with the Fall 2027 semester, all new courses in 自慰视频鈥檚 Brightspace will use the New Content Experience by default. This change brings improvements to the design and usability of the Content tool in each course. While Instructors can revert back to the Classic Content view for any course, the default for new courses will be the New Content Experience.

Additionally, starting in June 2026, Instructors and other course builders will have the option to enable this New Content Experience in any of their courses. Until now, Instructors had to email the Brightspace Support team to enable this view for each course. This update gives Instructors more direct control over the display of their course content and allows them to experiment with the New Content Experience before it becomes the default view beginning with the Fall 2027 semester.

Importantly, it is worth noting that this change only impacts the Content page of a course. Activities like assignments, quizzes, discussions and areas like the course homepage, Class Progress, and Grades are not impacted by this change.

Why is the default Content view changing?

The New Content Experience is a more modern and intuitive design for the Content area of Brightspace courses. Since the Content page in a course is the most used area by faculty and students, this update to the default view of the Content page brings new improvements and better usability to Brightspace courses. From having an improved instructor workflow for adding materials to their Content page to better support for mobile devices for students, the New Content Experience is an improvement to Brightspace that will continue to get enhancements and long-term support for years to come.

How will this impact my courses?

All courses in the Fall 2027 semester and moving forward will have the New Content Experience enabled by default. This view can be changed to the Classic Content Experience by Instructors and other course builders on a course-by-course basis. It is important to note that no content is lost when switching between Classic and New Content Experience. The only change is how that content is displayed.

While this change is an important step in keeping 自慰视频's Brightspace environment modern and useful to instructors and students, we know that there are going to be questions about this transition. Below are answers to some common questions about the New Content Experience.听

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What are some key considerations when updating a course for the New Content Experience?

The New Content Experience is focused more on HTML pages and has some different names for common components of the Content page. Additionally, there is a difference in how Brightspace displays Content with availability restrictions. While the Classic Content view displays Content items that are not available yet to students along with the date/time that they will become available, in the New Content Experience, these items are hidden from student view until that Start Date is reached. For other specific examples of differences, refer to the next question in this list.

Most importantly, the New Content Experience will continue to get updates and improvements from D2L (the company that makes Brightspace), while the Classic Content view will not. Changing the default course Content experience to the New Content Experience ensures that 自慰视频鈥檚 Brightspace environment stays up to date with new features and capabilities throughout the coming years.

Lastly, if you would like an empty Sandbox course to test and build out content in the New Content Experience, we can do that. Just email the Brightspace Support team at brightspace@vanderbilt.edu to ask us to create a Sandbox course for you. Then you can start from scratch or copy content from another course to start working from there.

  • What are some differences between the New and Classic Content Experiences?

Below are some of the main differences between the two Content views:

    • New Content Experience has a more visually appealing and more modern design.
    • Classic Content view uses modules and submodules for organization, while the New Content Experience uses Units, Lessons, and Folders for organization.
    • Table of Contents changes from a dedicated, single page in the Classic view to a consistent left sidebar on any Content page in the New Content Experience.
    • This Table of Contents sidebar in New Content Experience also displays availability dates and completion stats to students.
    • New Content Experience allows for color coding to be applied to Units, Lessons, and Folders. These colors appear in the Table of Contents on the left side of any Content page.
    • Content items use various icons in the Table of Contents sidebar to identify types of items (file uploads, pages, assignments, quizzes, discussions, etc).
    • New Content Experience emphasizes HTML pages as Content items instead of simply acting as a file storage system.
    • Content pages are displayed inline with the Table of Contents sidebar instead of on a separate page for each content item.
    • New Content Experience shows activities like Assignments, Quizzes, and Discussions inline on the Content page instead of needing to be opened in a new page.
    • These activity views also display more information on these activities for both students and instructors.
    • Newer features like Lumi Pro Content Creation are only available via the New Content Experience.

  • Is there anything in the Classic Content view that is NOT in the New Content Experience?

While the New Content Experience brings many different improvements, there are some features that are unique to the Classic Content view.

    • Bookmarks are currently not available in the New Content Experience.
    • No dedicated Table of Contents page.
      • Note 鈥 Table of Contents is now integrated on the left side of all Content pages.
    • Students are not able to bulk download all course materials from the Table of Contents page.
    • No dedicated Course Schedule page in Content.
      • Note 鈥 Students can still view the course calendar for upcoming dates and deadlines.
    • No integrated search option within a document.
      • Note 鈥 Users can still use the normal 鈥淔ind on Page鈥 tool available in almost all web browsers.
    • No easy print option for HTML pages.
    • No dedicated Syllabus page by default.
      • Note 鈥 This is easily replaced by adding the Syllabus as its own Content item.
    • For Instructors and other course builders, adding files from the course鈥檚 Manage Files tool does not allow multiple files to be selected and added at one time.
    • The New Content Experience does not currently allow for bulk editing of Content items.
  • What if I prefer the Classic Content view?

During this transition period, and even once the default Content view has been changed, Instructors and other course builders still control what Content view they want to have in their courses. These users can decline to switch to the New Content Experience for the 2026-27 academic year, and starting with the Fall 2027 semester, they will have the ability to change back to the Classic Content view as needed on a course-by-course basis. Refer to our guide here on how to make the change from one Content view to another.

  • How can I view the New Content Experience in my course today?

Instructors and other course builders will have the option of switching to the New Content Experience in courses throughout the 2026-27 academic year. The first time one of these users visits the Content page in a course, there will be a notification giving these users the option to enable the New Content Experience for that course. For more information on how to enable the New Content Experience, and how to change back to the Classic Content view, refer to our guide on this topic here.

  • Can students choose what Content Experience they see?

No. Only Instructors and other course builders are able to change the Content view in a course. This view is then shown to all users who interact with the Content page of a course.

  • What will happen to my Sandbox or Groups course?

Courses that do not fit into a regular academic semester like 2027 Fall or 2028 Spring will not be impacted. There is not currently a way to change the default for these groups of courses like Sandbox Courses or Groups without changing all the courses that currently exist within those categories. Instructors of those courses can switch to the New Content Experience if they wish, but the default will remain the Classic Content view.听
