Frequently Asked Questions
The Data Playground features questions from the core AmericasBarometer questionnaire. These are items that were asked in most countries and in most survey rounds. Focusing on these commonly asked questions makes it possible to compare results reliably across countries and over time. The tool includes data from 2004 to 2023.
It is important to note that not all questions are included in every country and every survey round. To confirm whether a specific question was included in a particular round or country, users should refer to the official AmericasBarometer questionnaires, which are available on our website. You can view the core questionnaires here and access country-specific questionnaires by clicking on a specific country.
Within the Data Playground, you can customize your analysis by selecting from a menu of available variables. You can filter responses, choose how they are displayed, and explore patterns by survey round, country, demographic groups, or other survey questions.
You can generate histograms for individual survey questions, examine time series trends for a single question across survey rounds, and compare responses across countries. Additionally, you can conduct crosstabulations, analyzing a single outcome variable by sociodemographic groups or another survey question. For each type of figure, you can choose specific countries and survey rounds.
The Data Playground focuses on descriptive statistics. It does not conduct more advanced statistical analyses, such as regression models, that account for multiple variables at once. This means the results highlight patterns and differences across groups but do not explain why those differences exist or account for other contributing factors.
Weighted. Responses are scaled so that each country-year has 1,500 respondents, ensuring cross-country and cross-time comparability. Some country-years also have poststratification weights to match the sample with population distributions on region, urban/rural residency, sex, age, education levels, and/or wealth.
Yes, you can easily download your results. Use the buttons at the bottom of the Data Playground to save a graph as an image file or export the underlying data as a CSV file.
